What began as a bramble-covered piece of land in 2001 has grown, evolved and taken on a life of its own. Now 25 years later, Tanglewood is still changing, still growing and still very much a labour of love.

Tanglewood has been created and cared for by Kerry and Tony for more than two decades, gradually transforming what was once a mass of brambles into the nine acres of gardens, woodland and ponds you see today.

Kerry is a retired nurse and midwife, gardener, maker and the person responsible for many of Tanglewood’s more unusual and exotic plants. When she’s not in the garden, you’ll often find her experimenting with glass, creating mosaics and fired-glass pieces, or baking the homemade cakes you’ll find in the Cake Hut.

Tony is a retired farrier, having spent 45 years in the trade, and is the main muscle behind much of what happens at Tanglewood. He creates the garden’s wood carvings from fallen timber, carves walking sticks and takes on much of the physical work around the garden. Not quite the head gardener, perhaps, but certainly an essential part of keeping Tanglewood growing. And apparently, he has plenty more ideas. He just hasn’t thought of them yet.

Together, Kerry and Tony have allowed Tanglewood to develop in its own wonderfully unconventional way. What was originally imagined as a ten-year project has become something rather more permanent.
