Tanglewood isn’t a manicured garden, and that’s entirely the point. Across nine acres, woodland, ponds, native planting and the occasional exotic have been allowed to develop into a wonderfully natural landscape.
Paths wind through the garden with benches and quiet places to stop along the way, while four ponds provide important habitats for the wildlife that calls Tanglewood home.

FOUR PONDS FULL OF LIFE
Where the wild things gather.
The ponds have been part of Tanglewood almost from the beginning. The first was created in 2002, followed by the Bridge Pond in 2003 and Kingfisher Pond in 2004, with the fourth, Golden Pond, dug in 2013.
Today, the water and surrounding boggy areas are thriving habitats for wildlife. Mallards, moorhens, kingfishers and herons are among the many birds drawn to the ponds, alongside dragonflies, damselflies, frogs, toads and newts.
And if you’re lucky, you might spot one of Tanglewood’s less frequent visitors too. Egrets have been seen here, while the surrounding woodland is home to everything from woodpeckers and owls to squirrels, rabbits and badgers.

Tanglewood changes constantly with the seasons.
What’s flowering, growing, flying or hiding amongst the undergrowth is never quite the same from one visit to the next.
Spring brings new growth and an abundance of frogs and toads around the ponds, while summer fills the garden with colour, butterflies and insects. As the season moves on, the woodland and planting shift again.
It’s one of the reasons Tanglewood is worth returning to.
